People go to business functions and events and collect huge number of beautiful and sparkly business cards of other people in return of yours. Now what should be the next step? One option can be to wait for you telephone to ring and your inbox to be snowed under emails. If you are quite complacent and satisfied with your current situation then you should really do that. But those who really want long lasting relationships; they must not forget the benefits of follow up. They must keep the rule “out of sight, out of mind”. Organize your business cards according to the priority. First will be those very important people whom you need to contact immediately within 2 days of the first meeting. Second will the ones you contact within 7 days. Last will be those you contact within 3 weeks.

Do collect information about the person and be prepared. Be sincere and genuine. Try to do something which will retain you in their memory forever. Position yourself quite differently, in unique way. In follow up you can add a personal touch of that person’s life or personality in conversation. You can refer them some restaurant suitable to their taste, or you can ask about their children’s upcoming exam results. Show your interest towards the person. Make them feel important. Personalize the conversation according to the person. Also show your preferred outcomes.

Always leave hand written notes after meetings. Hand written notes give a special accent to relationships. It shows that you have invested your time to cherish the relationship. This should always be your first priority for the most preferred people. Emails and phone can be used as a second alternative.

Always talk on phone in good and light mood with a smile as your voice tells the whole story about your mood. Show your energy and excitement through your voice. Do contact them, if you don’t have enough time, through emails with personal touch.
